When completing various USCIS forms and requests, you’ll encounter a section where they request your USCIS Online Account ID.

The U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) manages immigration affairs in the United States. Recently, it has shifted towards an online approach. This transition has introduced the need for an online USCIS account identifier for individuals with an account.

Keep in mind that not everyone is required to have an account. We’ll explain whether it’s necessary for you and provide instructions on how to create one if necessary.

Understanding Your USCIS Online Account

USCIS advises the utilization of online accounts for updates on cases and correspondence with immigration offices. Each person’s profile is linked to an exclusive 12-digit registration code.

USCIS account numbers differ from alien registration codes (A-Numbers) or receipt numbers. They constitute a unique numerical sequence that identifies your online account.

Here are the advantages of keeping a USCIS web account:

1. Monitor your current case status and trace your case history.
2. Respond to Requests for Additional Evidence/Information (RFIs).
3. Receive notifications and updates concerning your case.
4. Manage your contact information.

USCIS online identifiers are available to all, including native-born citizens. Additionally, legal representatives can establish an identifier to oversee their clients’ cases online.

If you opt not to use your USCIS web identifier, USCIS will continue to process your application or request through their digital submission platform. You will receive notifications and form updates via mail from the U.S. Postal Service.

You can also track the progress of your case even without an online identifier. Just head to the USCIS online case status webpage and input your receipt number.

Find Your USCIS Online Identifier: Where to Discover It

If you’ve previously submitted certain paper forms, you may receive a notification referred to as the Online USCIS Account Access Notices. Look for the online USCIS account code located at the top of this notification.

Alternatively, if you’ve previously applied, petitioned, or requested through the USCIS digital submission system, they can electronically provide you with the code.

Don’t worry if you’re unable to find the code. There’s no need for concern. If you’re unsure whether USCIS has assigned you a code in the past, leaving the “Online USCIS Account Number” field blank when filling out a form is acceptable. You also have the option to create a new account if necessary.

How to Create Your Online USCIS Account Number 

If you wish to create a USCIS web ID before submitting an application or request, you can register via the USCIS site.

You also have the choice to incorporate paper-filed cases into your account. Just click on “My Account” and select “Add paper-filed cases” from the dropdown menu. Enter the receipt numbers, and you will be able to access your case’s status and history.

If you have not submitted your case online but have a receipt number beginning with “IOE” and the Access Code from your USCIS Account Access Notification, you can link the case to your account.

This allows you to do the following: 

• observe the case’s status and history,
• send encrypted messages,
• review notifications,
• upload supplementary evidence,
• and address Requests for Additional Information (RFIs).

New Immigrants: Obtaining Your Initial Green Card

After obtaining an immigrant visa from the U.S. embassy, newcomers can create a USCIS online identifier upon completing the USCIS immigrant fee.

This facilitates tracking the progress of the green card. USCIS will send electronic notifications regarding case updates, and newcomers can update their mailing addresses as necessary.

To establish your USCIS online identifier, you will undergo an identity verification procedure, which includes providing accurate answers to questions regarding your immigration history.

USCIS recommends preparing several documents to verify your account:

• Passports
• Immigrant visas
• Copy of visa applications
• Copy of immigrant petitions (Forms I-130)

Establishing an online account is not a requirement to track the progress of your green card. You can still accomplish this by Case Statuses Online. 

Retain your USCIS immigrant fee payment receipt number, beginning with “IOE.” This number is essential for tracking your case.

Upon receiving your USCIS online ID, be sure to securely store it for future application purposes.
